What is the difference between a pergola and a verandah?

The difference between pergolas and verandas is that the pergola is a freestanding structure which can be added to any outdoor space. Verandas must be attached to your home and are usually used to create a luxury patio area that leads to the outdoors.

A popular choice amongst many UK homeowners, pergolas and verandas are the perfect way to redefine your outdoor living space and create an area that can be used for a variety of different purposes. But what makes a pergola and veranda different?

Both verandas and pergolas boast a range of unique performance features, as well as bespoke aesthetics that are suitable for a variety of different properties. Keep on reading to find out more about the versatile designs and how they differ.

What is a Pergola?

The term ‘pergola’ is an Italian word that means an outdoor structure that has been purposely designed to support the growth of climbing plants. The attached roof beams and rafters give the plants something to grow on, which over time, will provide a home with a naturally shaded outdoor living space.

A pergola is an incredibly versatile structure that has the option to be attached to an existing property or freestanding within an open space.  With this particular style, you can tailor the design to suit your home perfectly, giving you an outdoor living area that you can enjoy year after year and for a variety of unique purposes.

Pergolas can be designed to suit a range of design, size and shape options, meaning you can tailor the pergola to suit your needs perfectly. Traditionally, pergolas were made using wooden materials.

Today’s pergolas are often manufactured using durable and weatherproof materials, like aluminium, to offer you a long lasting product that provides the same amount of natural shade and privacy. The modern advancements also allow you to use your new pergola space during the coldest of winters and hottest of summers with the option to install electric heaters, LED lighting as well as glass walls and doors.

What is a Veranda?

‘Verandah’ Is a term that originates from the Middle East, and essentially means, ‘a place leading to the outdoors’. As well as this, the term ‘veranda’ originates from the Spanish word ‘baranda’ which also has the same meaning.

Verandas differs from pergolas, in that the profile has to be attached to an existing property. The flexible design can be attached to the front, rear and sides of a home, making it the perfect way to extend your home and seamlessly blend the interiors of a property with the exterior surroundings.

The structure of the modern verandas is usually long and narrow in shape, made to match the height and width of any property. The modern design of verandas allows you to create a space that can not only be used during the summer but also when the temperatures drop. Opt for glazed walls and doors, and optional heating solutions to create a room-like atmosphere that can be used all year long.
